This closes a week-long GEO Lab arc. On Monday we lined up the studies and found they flatly contradict each other on whether Reddit is still AI’s #1 citation source — reported Perplexity Reddit-share alone swings from 7% to 47%. On Tuesday we pre-registered four predictions and published the method before touching data. On Thursday we posted every provenance number. Today we make the call — and turn it into a checklist.
So is Reddit still the #1 source AI engines cite?
Technically yes — and it barely matters. In our provenance test, reddit.com was the single most-cited domain: 12 citations, edging out TechRadar (10). So the “Reddit is #1” headline is literally true. But “#1” here means #1 in a field so fragmented that no source dominates: those 12 citations were 3.9% of 306 total, spread across 219 distinct domains. Being the top domain in that landscape is like being the tallest person in a crowd where everyone is roughly the same height. The honest read: Reddit is uniquely broad (it shows up across engines) but shallow (it’s a sliver of any answer’s actual sources).
And does a Reddit mention cause an AI citation?
Contributing signal — not the cause. This was the real question underneath the “get on Reddit” advice, and the data gives a clear directional answer. The tell is the gap between how often Reddit appears and how often it’s the linked source:
On Google AI Mode, Reddit showed up in two-thirds of answers but was the source engines actually linked less than 4% of the time. That gap is the whole story: Reddit is context the engine reads, far more than it is the citation the engine hands you. If a Reddit mention were causing citations, we’d expect appearance and sourcing to move together. They don’t — appearance runs 5–17× higher than sourcing. So a Reddit thread plausibly helps an engine gain confidence about you (corroboration), but it is not a switch that flips a citation on. We couldn’t run a clean randomized test (you can’t ethically fake Reddit threads, and authority is a confound), so we’re careful here: this is strong directional evidence for “contributing signal,” not a proof of zero causal effect.
What did the pre-registered scorecard say?
We locked four predictions on Tuesday, before any data. Here’s how they landed — misses and all:

Two confirmed, one partial, one honestly deferred. We’re not going to dress that up. The two that landed (P1 and P4) are the ones that answer the headline question. Let’s be straight about the other two.
Why P3 is only “partial,” and P2 is deferred
P3 predicted a split: Perplexity and Google linking Reddit directly, ChatGPT and Gemini just name-dropping brands. The Google-vs-ChatGPT direction held — Reddit appeared in 66.7% of Google AI Mode answers versus 14.3% on ChatGPT, and 5 of ChatGPT’s 12 answers cited zero URLs at all (brand mentions, no links). But Perplexity throttled us to a single question out of twelve after logging us out mid-run — the same defense we hit last week. So the half of P3 that hinges on Perplexity is untested. We’re calling it partial rather than pretending a 1-question sample settles it.
P2 — the authority-matched-pair test — needs two things we couldn’t finish inside a one-week window: pairs of brands matched on authority but differing on Reddit footprint, and a genuine intervention (earning a real Reddit presence, then re-measuring). Faking either would poison the result. So P2 rolls into a longer-running pilot; more below. The throttling itself is a finding worth repeating: engines actively resist large-scale, repeatable measurement, which is exactly why small, pre-registered, transparent tests — run patiently — are how you actually get a number you can trust.

Here’s the payload. Reddit is not one-size-fits-all — its exposure varies wildly by engine, and “exposure” is not “citation.” Match your effort to what each engine actually does with Reddit:
