Quick answer: Verdict — confirmed. There is no universal GEO strategy that wins across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Gemini at once. We pre-registered four predictions, then ran the experiment: three of the four landed (only 0.5% of 395 cited domains were shared by all four engines; 85.1% were unique to one). The right play is a shared citable foundation — get corroborated across the web — plus per-engine tuning. Below is the final scorecard and a concrete checklist for each engine.
This is the close of a week-long GEO Lab arc. On Monday we made the claim — there is no one GEO strategy for every AI engine. On Tuesday we published the method and locked four predictions before touching any data. On Thursday we posted every raw number. Today we make the call — and turn it into something you can act on Monday morning.
So what’s the verdict on “no universal GEO strategy”?
Confirmed. Not on vibes — on the two predictions that actually test the claim. If a universal strategy existed, engines would share a large common pool of trusted sources. They don’t: only two domains out of 395 (reddit.com and semrush.com) were cited by all four engines, and the closest engine pair overlapped just 8.2%. Here’s the final scorecard:
| # | Pre-registered prediction | Result | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Under 15% of domains cited by all four engines | 0.5% | ✅ Confirmed |
| 2 | Over 70% of domains unique to one engine | 85.1% | ✅ Confirmed |
| 3 | Reddit heavy on Perplexity, near-zero on Google/Gemini | Reversed — Reddit highest on Google (40%), lowest on Perplexity (7%) | ❌ Wrong |
| 4 | ChatGPT cites the fewest distinct domains | Confirmed — ChatGPT 59, below Gemini 63, Perplexity 74, Google 266 | ✅ Confirmed |
Three of four pre-registered predictions confirmed — including both that directly test the claim. The lone miss, P3, isn’t about whether engines differ; it’s about the texture of the difference — and it turned into the most useful finding of the week.
Where we were wrong — and why it’s the best part
We predicted Reddit would dominate Perplexity and barely register on Google and Gemini. The data flipped it: Google AI Mode cited Reddit on 40% of questions, Gemini 38%, ChatGPT 27%, and Perplexity just 7% — the lowest. We were wrong, on the record, because the pre-registration put the prediction there before we could quietly drop it.
Why the flip? Industry studies (the 680-million-citation analysis we cited Monday) found Perplexity leaning hard on Reddit overall. Our test used buyer-intent commercial queries (“best GEO tools,” “best B2B SaaS analytics”) — and on those, Perplexity reached for vendor and review sites while Google’s AI inherited its Reddit-heavy search index. The lesson: source mix shifts by query intent, not just by engine. Optimize for the questions your buyers actually ask, not a generic citation profile.
On P4 (which engine cites the fewest distinct domains): this one we can now call. On the first pass, Perplexity throttled systematic querying and stopped at 11 of 15 questions, so we held P4 open rather than compare incomplete pools. We went back, restarted collection from a clean browser session, and completed Perplexity’s full 15. With the gap closed, the verdict is clear: ChatGPT cited the fewest distinct domains — 59, below Gemini’s 63, Perplexity’s 74, and Google AI Mode’s 266 — even though it answered all 15 questions. P4 confirmed. One footnote worth keeping: Gemini answered 2 of its 15 questions with no web citations at all, straight from its training — a reminder that “cited sources” isn’t guaranteed on every engine for every query. And the throttling itself stays a real finding: engines resist large-scale, repeatable measurement, which is exactly why small, pre-registered, transparent tests — run patiently — are how you actually get the number.
What does this actually mean for your GEO strategy?
The single biggest mistake we see: teams pick one engine (usually ChatGPT, or now Google AI Mode since it just became the default for over a billion users) and assume the work transfers. It doesn’t. But the answer isn’t “build four separate strategies” either — that’s not affordable. The model that fits the data is two layers:
- Layer 1 — a shared citable foundation (≈70% of effort). The things that make every engine more confident to cite you. These pay off across all four.
- Layer 2 — per-engine tuning (≈30%). Targeted moves for the specific sources each engine over-indexes on.
The shared foundation — do this regardless of engine
This is the layer the 0.5% overlap can’t argue with: even divergent engines reward the same underlying signals of trust. Checklist:
- Build multi-source corroboration. Engines gain confidence when your site, Reddit, YouTube, review sites (G2/Capterra), and industry press all describe you the same way. One consistent story across independent sources beats one polished page.
- Publish original, citable data. First-party statistics are the strongest single predictor of AI citation — quotable numbers travel across engines.
- Add structured data and clean answer formatting. Clear H2 questions, concise answer-first paragraphs, FAQ and schema markup — readable by every retrieval backbone.
- Earn a Reddit and review-site presence. Reddit is one of only two domains cited by all four engines. You can’t fake it, but you can earn genuine mentions in relevant threads.
What’s the per-engine checklist for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Gemini?
Once the foundation is in place, tune for how each engine actually sources answers — grounded in our retrieval-backbone breakdown and this week’s Reddit data:
| Engine | What it over-indexes on | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Search | Conservative; cites only well-corroborated, high-agreement sources (Reddit 27%) | Get the same facts repeated across many independent sites; consistency > cleverness. Win the “everyone says the same thing” test. |
| Perplexity | On commercial queries, vendor & review sites over forums (Reddit only 7%) | Own your G2/Capterra/comparison-page footprint and publish head-to-head “X vs Y” content. Live-retrieval rewards fresh, specific pages. |
| Google AI Mode | Google’s index + E-E-A-T, and heavy Reddit (40%, the highest) | Keep classic SEO authority strong AND build real Reddit presence. Traditional ranking still feeds AI Mode. |
| Gemini | Google ecosystem signals; also Reddit-heavy (38%) | Same as Google AI Mode — authoritative, structured pages plus community corroboration. Treat them as a Google-shaped pair. |
How should you prioritize if you can’t do all four?
Sequence it by reach and overlap:
- Shared foundation first. It’s the only work that compounds across every engine — never skip it for engine-specific tactics.
- Google AI Mode + Gemini next. They’re the closest pair (8.2% overlap) and Google AI Mode now reaches 1B+ users by default. One Google-shaped effort moves two engines.
- Then ChatGPT, then Perplexity based on where your buyers actually research — check your own AI referral traffic before guessing.
That’s a defensible 70/30 split: a foundation everyone benefits from, and tuning aimed where the audience is, not where the hype is.
What we’re testing next
This week’s biggest surprise — Reddit being the one near-universal source, yet wildly different in weight per engine — sets up next week’s question: does earning a Reddit presence actually lift your citations across engines, or is it correlation? We’ll design a test to find out, and as always, we’ll pre-register the predictions before we collect. Subscribe if you want the methodology drop on Monday.
Frequently asked questions
Is there really no universal GEO strategy?
No single strategy wins everywhere — our experiment found only 0.5% of cited sources are shared by all four engines, confirming the claim. But there is a universal foundation (multi-source corroboration, original data, structured content) that helps with every engine. Build that first, then tune per engine.
Which AI engine should I optimize for first?
After the shared foundation, start with Google AI Mode — it just became the default for over a billion users — and Gemini, since the two overlap most (8.2%) and share Google’s signals. Then prioritize ChatGPT or Perplexity based on your own AI referral data.
Does Reddit help with AI citations?
Yes — Reddit is one of only two domains cited by all four engines in our test, and Google AI Mode cited it on 40% of buyer-intent questions. Earn genuine mentions in relevant threads; don’t spam.
Why did your Reddit prediction fail?
We expected Perplexity to lean hardest on Reddit, but on commercial buyer-intent queries Google AI Mode did (40%) and Perplexity least (7%). Source mix depends on query intent, not just the engine — optimize for the questions your buyers ask.
How do you verify these GEO claims?
