Is Reddit Still the #1 Source AI Engines Cite in 2026? The Data Contradicts Itself

Quick answer: It depends entirely on who you ask — and that’s the real story. Published 2026 studies put Reddit anywhere from the #1 LLM citation source (Semrush: 40.1%) to a platform YouTube just overtook (Bluefish: YouTube 16% vs Reddit 10% of LLM answers). On Perplexity alone, reported Reddit share swings from 46.7% (Bluefish) down to 6.7% in our own GEO Lab test. There is no single “Reddit number” — it moves by engine, by query type, and by who did the measuring. So this week we’re testing the question underneath the noise: does a Reddit mention actually cause an AI citation, or just correlate with one?

“Get on Reddit — it’s the #1 source AI engines cite.” You’ve seen that advice everywhere in 2026. It’s repeated so often it feels like settled fact. So at GEO Lab we did what we always do with settled facts: we lined up the actual studies side by side. They don’t agree. They barely agree on what continent they’re on.

What changed this month (and why it reopened the question)

  • YouTube overtook Reddit. A Bluefish AI study (reported by Adweek, Jan 26, 2026) found YouTube now appears in 16% of LLM answers vs Reddit’s 10% — a “complete reversal” from mid-2025, when Reddit held the top social spot. Reddit fell ~29% over six months; YouTube rose ~78%.
  • Reddit is up and down at the same time. Tinuiti’s Q1 2026 report found Reddit’s citation share grew at least 73% in commercial categories (tech, electronics) from October to January — while Conductor research showed Reddit’s overall citation frequency dropped about 50%. Both can be true: cited less often, but leaned on harder when it is cited.
  • The per-engine numbers don’t line up. Tinuiti put Gemini’s Reddit citation rate at 0.1%; our own test found Reddit on Gemini in 38.5% of buyer-intent questions. Same platform, wildly different readings.

So is Reddit the #1 source AI engines cite, or not?

Here’s every major 2026 reading we could find, in one place. Watch the Perplexity column especially — the source everyone calls “Reddit’s favorite engine”:

Study (2026) What it measured Reddit headline
Semrush (150K citations) Share of LLM citations Reddit #1 at 40.1%
Bluefish / Adweek % of LLM answers citing the platform YouTube 16% > Reddit 10% (overtaken)
Tinuiti Q1 (7 engines) Per-engine citation rate Perplexity ~31% social, Reddit-dominant · Gemini 0.1%
Conductor Overall citation frequency trend Reddit frequency down ~50%
GEO Lab (our test, 15 buyer-intent Qs) % of questions where Reddit was cited Google 40% · Gemini 38.5% · ChatGPT 26.7% · Perplexity 6.7%

Five studies, five different stories. The market consensus — “Perplexity loves Reddit, Google ignores it” — is exactly inverted in our buyer-intent data: Reddit showed up most on Google AI Mode and least on Perplexity.

Why do the numbers disagree so badly?

Three reasons, and all three matter for how you read any “Reddit is #1” headline:

  1. Different metrics wearing the same label. “Reddit share” can mean share of all citations (Semrush), % of answers that include it (Bluefish), or % of questions where it appears at least once (ours). These produce different numbers from the same reality. A “47%” and a “7%” can both be honest.
  2. Query type changes everything. Reddit surges on commercial, “best/vs/alternatives” questions (Tinuiti’s 73% jump was in shopping categories) and fades on factual ones. Measure a different question set, get a different Reddit.
  3. The engines themselves moved. Google made AI Mode the default this quarter; retrieval backbones shifted. A mid-2025 snapshot and an early-2026 snapshot are measuring two different web. This is exactly why there’s no universal GEO strategy across engines — and why a single Reddit stat can’t travel.

What we already know from our own data

When we ran 15 buyer-intent questions across four engines, Reddit was one of only two domains cited by all four engines (the other was Semrush) out of 395 unique sources. So Reddit is genuinely special — it’s the rare source with cross-engine reach. But “appears across engines” is not the same as “appears a lot,” and it’s definitely not the same as “caused the citation.” That gap is the whole game.

We saw the same broad-but-shallow Reddit footprint back in our first test, when we asked 3 engines the same 12 questions. Reddit kept showing up — but so did the question we still haven’t answered: would those brands have been cited without the Reddit thread?

What should you actually do right now?

Until we have causation data, treat Reddit as a corroboration play, not a silver bullet:

  • Don’t optimize to a single Reddit stat. Anyone quoting one “Reddit is X%” number is hiding the metric and the query set. Ask which.
  • Match the source to the engine. Reddit/community for Perplexity-style retrieval; depth and ranking strength for Google AI Mode. It is not one-size-fits-all.
  • Build corroboration, not just presence. Engines gain confidence to cite you when multiple independent sources agree — your site, Reddit, YouTube, review sites all saying the same thing. A lone Reddit mention is one vote, not a guarantee.

Coming this week at GEO Lab: we’re running an experiment to separate correlation from causation. Does a brand getting mentioned in a Reddit thread actually move the needle on whether AI engines cite it — or does Reddit just happen to discuss brands that were already citable? We’ll publish the method tomorrow, collect data midweek, and give you a verdict by Friday. If “get on Reddit” is real advice, we want to show you how much it’s worth — with our own numbers.

FAQ

Is Reddit really the #1 source AI engines cite in 2026?
By some measures (Semrush: 40.1% of citations), yes. By others (Bluefish), YouTube has overtaken it, appearing in 16% of LLM answers vs Reddit’s 10%. There is no single agreed number — it depends on the engine, the query type, and the metric used.

Which AI engine cites Reddit the most?
It’s disputed. Industry reports often say Perplexity (up to ~47%); our 15-question buyer-intent test found the opposite — Reddit appeared most on Google AI Mode (40%) and Gemini (38.5%), and least on Perplexity (6.7%). Different question sets produce different answers.

Does getting mentioned on Reddit get you cited by AI?
That’s the causation question no published study has cleanly answered — most show correlation. We’re testing it this week. For now, treat Reddit as one corroborating source among several, not a standalone tactic.

Should I still invest in Reddit for GEO?
Yes, but as part of a corroboration strategy, not because of any single citation stat. Reddit is one of very few sources that shows up across multiple engines, which makes it useful — but pair it with your own site, video, and review-site presence.
